Docker Machine has been deprecated for years now, which is I assume how Toolbox manages a cluster of docker vms. As I said – PWD is a project you can literally download and run if you want swarm-in-docker, but seriously, why even chase this now? Neither Desktop nor Toolbox is used to deploy production swarms, and running a swarm on single node docker is pretty edge case.

The swarm manager takes action to match the actual number of replicas to your request, creating and destroying containers as necessary. Windows server includes Docker EE. When activated you can use docker commands from the command line. Docker swarm init will upgrade that Docker EE instance to swarm mode, and return a join token you can use to add a 2nd Windows Server Docker EE instance as a worker. What Swarm lacks is a built-in way of routing traffic to containers based on request characteristics like the hostname and URL. Adding an additional infrastructure component to expose services behind different domain names can make Swarm less suitable for multiple production workloads.

Kubernetes applications are deployed by creating a declarative representation of your stack’s resources in a YAML file. Deploy a stack to a swarm

Docker Swarm mode compares favorably to alternative orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes. It’s easier to get started with as it’s integrated with Docker and there are fewer concepts to learn. It’s often simpler to install and maintain on self-managed hardware, although pre-packaged Kubernetes solutions like MicroK8s have eroded the Swarm convenience factor. Tasks created by service1 and service2 will be able to reach each other via the overlay network.

The last stage in this process is for the worker node to execute the tasks that have been assigned from the manager node. Service is the definition of the tasks to execute/ run on the manager or worker nodes. Service is the central structure of the swarm system and acts as the primary root for the user to interact with the swarm. When we create a service, we have to specify which container image to use and which commands to execute inside running containers.

Services and tasks

A node can be avirtual machine or aphysical, bare metal machine. To deploy your application to a swarm, you submit a service definition to amanager node. The manager node dispatches units of work calledtasks to worker nodes. When Docker is running in swarm mode, you can still run standalone containers on any of the Docker hosts participating in the swarm, as well as swarm services. A key difference between standalone containers and swarm services is that only swarm managers can manage a swarm, while standalone containers can be started on any daemon.

Worker nodes are responsible for executing tasks that dispatch to them from manager nodes. An agent runs on each worker node and reports to the manager node on its assigned tasks. It helps the manager node to maintain the desired state of each worker node.
